Stargazers all over the world are getting ready for the first super blue blood moon eclipse in more than 150 years and many are traveling to find the best locations to see it. This rare celestial phenomenon is occurring because a blue moon, a total lunar eclipse and a supermoon are all taking place at the same time. A blue moon is when two full moons happen in the same calendar month; lunar eclipses occur when the moon passes into earth’s shadow, and supermoons happen when the moon’s perigee (its closest approach to earth in a single orbit) coincides with a full moon. The super blue blood moon phenomenon hasn’t happened since 1866, and it is occurring because a total lunar eclipse is combining with a blue moon, which is in its closest position to earth, making it a supermoon.
